I asked a pretty, young homeless woman if I could take her home. She smiled at me and said yes.

The look on her face soon changed, however, when I walked off with her cardboard box.

Explanation

The humor comes from a bait-and-switch. The listener assumes the person is going to take the woman home, but instead, they take her cardboard box. It plays on expectations and the double meaning of "take her home".

the joke doesn't work because if he asked to take her home he would say "can I take your home?" not "can I take you home?" so she would reply with no.
