Why Sean is Shawn but Dean isn't Dawn

  • Sean is pronounced like Shawn and Dean isn’t pronounced like Dawn because basically english makes no sense and steals shit from other languages. Sean is the Irish version of John, and in Irish, the “ea” can sound like “aw,” so when the name got taken into English, people kept saying it that way. But Dean is just an English word and name where “ea” usually sounds like “ee,” like in team or bean. So they’re spelled kinda similar but they come from different languages with different rules, and now we’re all stuck memorizing a bunch of random shitty pronunciations for the rest of our autistic lives.
