Understanding Black Holes: Gravity, Structure, and Detection

    • A black hole is a region in space where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape from it, usually forming when a massive star collapses under its own gravity at the end of its life. The boundary around it is called the event horizon, and once anything crosses this boundary, it cannot return. Black holes are mainly described by their mass, spin, and electric charge, and they come in several types, including stellar black holes formed from dying stars, supermassive black holes found at the centers of galaxies like our galaxy, intermediate black holes, and hypothetical primordial black holes from the early universe. Gravity bends spacetime, and a black hole represents an extreme case of this curvature. The size of a non-rotating black hole is related to its mass by the Schwarzschild radius: R squared=2gm/C squared. R is the Schwarzschild radius, G is the gravitational constant, M is the mass, and c is the speed of light. Scientists can't see black holes directly because they emit no light, but they detect them by observing nearby stars, X-rays from hot gas falling inward, gravitational waves from collisions, and images captured by projects such as the Event Horizon Telescope. Despite their reputation, black holes are not giant cosmic vacuum cleaners. From far away, their gravity behaves like that of any other object with the same mass.
