They were fighting for state sovereignty. The federal government was doing things that were supposed to be done

By the state governments. The war was really about tariffs. The union had the majority in Congress in the presidential seat and was levying tariffs to support their own economic goals. The confederate states were fighting for freedom from the corruption. Slavery had very little to do with it. Many in the north supported slavery and many of south were against it.
