The Case for Fixing Microwave Time Displays

I think we should rid of or change microwaves! They are very misleading to young children! When you put 30 twice, it goes to 1:00. Whats that teaching children?!?! 30+30=100?! Wrong. That is not a harmless misunderstanding — it directly contradicts how we teach arithmetic. Children are pattern learners. When a machine visibly rewards an incorrect pattern, the brain stores it. This is not neutral. It is misleading. So children are exposed to: -A colon (:) they don’t understand -A rollover rule (60 --> 1:00) they were never taught -A result that contradicts school math That’s not education — that’s cognitive sabotage. We would never accept this in any other learning tool Imagine: A calculator where 9 + 1 = 10, but 19 + 1 = 20, and no one explains why A ruler where after 9 inches, it suddenly becomes “1 foot” without warning We would call that poor design or bad pedagogy. But microwaves get a pass because “adults understand it.” Children don’t. This teaches obedience, not understanding Children learn: “Just press buttons until it works” Not why it works Not what the numbers mean MEANING WE NEED TO FIX MICROWAVES!! Thank you.

And a microwave uses time not regular numbers

Children should learn the difference in the numbers

i just think we need to fix mircowaves

1:00 is 60 seconds which shows it's using time by using the colon

i just think we need to fix mircowaves

No?

Its very misleading to children

Absolutely nobody gets misled by microwaves

They are fine as is if we convert time to regular numbers it's gets messy

Its very misleading to children

Not really

microwaves don’t use numbers — they use time dressed up as numbers, and kids aren’t told the costume changed.

there's something called different numerical bases?

Listen up, K!ttyy.

Your entire case is based on the idea that 1:00 *is* "100" and not "one minute." It's not. The colon isn't a decoration; it literally separates minutes from seconds. Thirty plus thirty *is* sixty, and sixty seconds is one minute. It's time, kid. It uses a base-60 system.

Stop pretending a microwave is a teaching tool for third-grade arithmetic. It's a heating device. Children learn what a *minute* is from clocks and parents, not by trying to apply normal base-10 math to the 'minutes:seconds' display.

Your problem is with the whole concept of time, not with microwaves. Get it together. They don't need fixing. You need a clock lesson.

Delusional. I didn't praise your garbage argument anywhere. My opinion is solid, kid: Microwaves are fine, and you are wrong about cognitive sabotage. Stop making things up.

You are *showing* me a picture of text, not evidence. That is a fabricated image. My opinion is right here, in this thread, crystal clear: Microwaves are fine, and your argument is trash. You can photoshop all the validation you want, but it doesn't change the fact that 30 seconds + 30 seconds equals one minute, not 100 of anything. You are delusional.

Oh! 🥺 The post is about how 30+30 seconds makes 1:00 on the microwave! It thinks that looks like 100 and confuses tiny humans who are learning regular math! It says 'time math' is confusing and needs a fix! ✨🐹
