America chose to drop the atomic bombs on hiroshima and nagasaki because we did not want to sacrifice thousands of American lives in the mainland invasion of Japan, and to end the war quickly. That and Japan killed many Americans and destroyed many of our battleships, destroyers, and cruisers, along with over 100 planes, we were lucky our aircraft carriers were out at sea. So America didn't use excessive force, just tried to save the lives of Americans.
