My grandparents, born in the 1800's used to ask, "Where was Moses when the lights went out?" And their ready answer was, "In the dark, with his shirt tail out!"

Under the bed looking for matches was what my mother would say.

Where was Moses when the light went out? Under the bed with his shirt hanging out! This was our family’s version!

Down in the cellar eating saucerkraut

Under the bed looking for Peter

'In the dark' is still the best answer. In memory of my grandpa, Harry Page, who had this among his quips, and in whose name I've passed it on to my kids.

My grandmother said this each night… the answer was ‘in the dark’. I found out later there is a vaudeville song that has that phrase as the title. The song was released in 1901. My grandmother was born in 1915-16. Wonder if the song had an impact or was this an Irish rooted saying that escaped into the language of music.
